Pokémon Heroes: Latios and Latias (2002) at a glance
Pokémon Heroes: Latios and Latias (2002) is Pokémon's fifth theatrical film. It is directed by Kunihiko Yuyama and it is one of the first two Pokémon movies available on Blu-ray along with Destiny Deoxys (2004).
Pokémon Heroes: Latios and Latias (2002) Synopsis
Every year the city of Alto Mare holds a special Water Pokémon race through its canal streets—and this time around, Ash and Misty are top competitors! Even though he doesn't win, Ash still finds his own special place in the heart of a mysterious girl that he rescues from two roguish women. But this isn't any ordinary girl—it's actually the Legendary Latias in disguise!
Ash gets a special peek into the secret world of Latios and Latias, but this world is soon threatened by the two women from before—Annie and Oakley—who are after the two Legendary Pokémon, as well as a mysterious jewel called the Soul Dew. These elements combined will let them control a powerful machine that normally protects against danger. When the machine malfunctions, though, it not only puts Latios and Latias at serious risk, but the entire city of Alto Mare!

Movie Review: Pokémon Heroes: Latios and Latias (2002)
Latias and Latios.
Pokémon films are the only Japanese films that I would always go for the English dub because I am used to it as it is the most common version available in stores near me. I also thought they wouldn't differ a lot from the original Japanese version since Pokémon is a renowned franchise but now after reviewing them in 2014? That thought have been proven completely wrong especially from this film.
A beautiful segment but removed.
Pokémon Heroes: Latios and Latias (2002) is beautiful, it sets in a refined city and it has great music. It feels romantic. It feels otherworldly at times. Unfortunately in the English dub, the entire backstory introduction has been removed and ultimately making the whole story altered. It is a wonder why the Pokémon company allows this or the production company decided to do this for the English version but it is evident that their "creativity" isn't fruitful.
Misty and her Corsola wins the Tour de Alto Mare.
In the beginning, it appears to have an interesting storyline. It also seems that they have played more with camera movements and angles which are refreshing and fun to watch as the city is beautiful. In the end? The story is not and the concept isn't satisfying. They could have been done so much better. I won't say there isn't story, there is, but it isn't well developed. There are female villains that appears to be promising too, but well, the character and story development is just unfortunately terrible.
Oakley and Annie.
Sight-sharing with Latios and Latias.
Honestly, the story could have been so much better if they put more effort into it. If only they did not decide to alter it completely and remove the introduction segment from the original version; this animated feature could have been one of the best Pokémon films out there with its beautiful music and settings but it just didn't make it!
Lorenzo, Bianca and Ash.
Ending this post, if you are not bothered by the lack of depth and weak story, Pokémon Heroes: Latios and Latias (2002) should be good. I enjoyed and love to watch Latios and Latias and all the other Pokémon coming to life through animation but I will be honest with you, this one may disappoint if you're watching this not solely for Pokémon.
PS. Gosh, why does Pokémon films that features Lugia, Latios and Latias are both a letdown... what an unpleasant coincident, I quite like them... They certainly deserve a better feature. :/
Movie Ratings
Will write a page regarding this and add this to all animated feature entries in the future.

I love Latios and Latias. As mentioned before, I love to watch them and all the other Pokémon coming to life through animation. It is because they are adorable and each have distinctive personality of their own; Latios is protective and selfless whereas Latias is friendly and playful!
Pokémon Heroes: Latios and Latias (2002) Movie Quotes
Compiled these myself!
- Everyone has a dream that fills their heart. A journey they must take. A destiny, to fulfill.
- As close as your imagination exists a magical place where wondrous creatures with incredible powers help make dreams come true. It's the world of Pokémon. People can capture Pokémon to be more than just pets. Human trainers and their Pokémon compete against others in amazing contests of skill and strategy.
- The best trainers one day become Pokémon masters. That's a dream that burns brightly for many but none more so than Ash Ketchum.
- Professor Oak gave Ash his very first Pokeball. Inside, was an Electric Pokemon whom Ash would spark a lifelong friendship, Pikachu.
- This is it. This was the book I was reading.
- It tells everything, all about Latios and Latias.
- But also about the jewel, right?
- But the last chapter is what's really amazing.
- What's in the last chapter?
- It tells all about how to operate a machine, something called the Defense Mechanism of Alto Mare.
- It's amazing, according to that book, it's the most powerful weapon ever build.
- Oh, I am not really interested in that. I care much more about the beautiful jewel.
- We have to use the soul dew to power it.
- They said it contains the soul of the Latios and it looks like a giant dew drops.
- Speaking of Latios, We have to remember to capture those Pokemon for Giovanni.
- Trainers, when you hear the Xatu, that would be your cue!
- You won't mind if I stand here, do you?
- It still surprises that last year's champion, Roz and his Wailmer are in the lead but newcomer Misty and her Corsola are not going to make it easy for him. These two are neck in neck, folks!
- It's okay Totodile. Everybody makes a wrong turn once in a while.
- Check out all the cool symbols on there. They tell the story of our town.
- They sort of look like Pokemon.
- Those are known as the Guardians of Alto Mare. That's Latios on the left and Latias on the right. Legend has it that they watch over our town and protects us in case of danger.
- Are they just statues or do they really exist?
- The book said they can take on completely different shape and human beings if they want to.
- They are spies for Giovanni.
- Don't tell me you never heard of Annie and Oakley? This could be the chance we are waiting for!
- Why don't we follow them? They are obviously up to no good!
- They owe me Chocolate Chip Mint.
- Pikachu? Don't you want any ice-cream?
- She is taking the form of a girl so that must be Latias.
- Is she kidding? That hairstyle.
- Amazing, she really is a Pokemon.
- Excuse me, I love that shirt. Where did you get it, Latias?
- Why did you run away? We just wanted to tell you something about the shirt you are wearing.
- It's last year's color.
- We're just trying to prevent a fashion disaster.
- Pikachu, thunderbolt them!
- This was a very expensive outfit and now it's completely ruin! Espeon, go after them now!
- It looks more like a palace than a museum.
- Is this a fossil of a Pokemon?
- You might said that. It also a remainder of our very best. These fossils are Pokemon that once terrorises Alto Mare.
- I have seen the light. I would definitely need a girl from this town.
- Long ago, the Aerodactyl and Kabutops were adopted by evil trainers to attack people. So everyone live in fear until Latios came and brought water to the town, drowning the evil Pokemon and turning our streets into canals. That was when the town named Alto Mare, which mean High Seas. That's also when they build the DMA. They want to make sure no one ever disrupt the peace again. Fortunately, they never had to use it.
- I don't know you!
- Latias, you want to play with your new friends?
- Hey, no offense. I thought Latias is the name of a Pokemon.
- I suppose you are wondering why Latias looks exactly like Bianca.
- Since we are best friends, she turns into me a lot.
- Latios has the power to project to us exactly what he sees.
- Sight sharing!
- This is a rare privilege, to see through the eyes of Latios.
- Grandpa know them since they were babies.
- I have known them since their father brought the water to our town. He rescued the people from a life of terror and left us with the beautiful water of city but I am afraid it is too much for him.
- He used all his power to bring the water and then vanish into thin air.
- But in his place there is a beautiful orb called the Soul Dew that contain the spirit of Latios.
- So Latios died saving the town, and his children became orphans.
- Hello are you lost? You don't look familiar.
- These two are full of surprises which of course make them more desirable.
- It's like it's spiritual or something.
- I found it!
- Technically yes but it belongs to both of us.
- This has a lot of stuff that the book didn't have.
- Let's see what this baby's made of.
- I can control the whole world from here!
- Look pop, I don't care if your town dries up, with this machine I can control the entire world if I want to.
- We had to go for world domination. It wasn't enough we had the most beautiful valuable jewel in the entire universe, you had to be a control freak.
- Too bad you didn't have enough control of yourself.
- Was that Latias or Bianca?
