Movie Review: Spell of the Unown (2000)
In my opinion, Spell of the Unown (2000) is one of the best earlier Pokémon films. It is my favorite as a child and still is today because of its hidden power; it has the ability to captivate with its rich Pokémon mythology and to move our hearts with loving messages!
Compared to the first two films, this film can standalone without the aid of other short films or sequels to enhance the story. The film does feel short though, so additional scenes and increment of total running time would be nice because the story moves a little too fast in the beginning, which may be confusing to those who are new to the Pokémon Universe.
Thankfully, the whole movie turns out an interesting fantasy dream. The visually pleasing animation and beautiful imagination would appeal the majority especially dreamers. There are also more action than before, more variety of Pokémon and it is fun to watch.
Pikachu, Pichu brothers, Clefa, Magby, Blissey,
Hitmontop, Sunflora, Furret, Smeargle and Shuckle.
Ending this post, I must mention that I certainly loved the animated short Pikachu & Pichu that comes with Spell of the Unown (2000). Featuring the Pichu Brothers and plenty of other second generation Pokémon, it is super endearing and light-hearted! Their lively adventure makes the whole animated feature perfect!
PS. I think this is the Pokémon film and short film that I've watched the most as a child!
Now I wonder how many times I've seen them!

Favorite Movie Character
Entei
I like Molly, it seems that she has a beautiful imagination but Entei is my favorite character from the Spell of the Unown (2000)! This is because he is devoted to Molly and will protect her with all his might as sees himself as her father. Although he does whatever she wants, he does not intends to spoil her; he just wants her to be happy and if she is happy, he is happy. Too bad he's just an illusion!
Entei and Pikachu.
Another special mention would be Spencer Hale, Molly's father. Although he is a renowned researcher, busy with his work, it is easy to tell that he loves her very much. He'd always spend time with her as much as possible and read her bed time stories!
Molly's real father reads her bed time stories.
Special thanks to Script-O-Rama for the movie transcript.
- These are legendary Pokémon, Molly. Lots of people believe in them, even though they've never seen them. And in this book, the artist imagined what some of them might look like.
- I've been looking for it since for a long time now.
- Entei looks a little scary to me. But you like Entei.
- Entei's real big and strong, but it's still nice. Just like you are, Papa.
- I'm like Entei, am I? lmagine that. Well, then I am Entei! Here we go!
- Another e-mail. It must be Schuyler again. It's always him.
- Professor, we found something. A hidden chamber with new clues about the Unown. Please, come quickly.
- I'll be back just as soon as I can. Keep me close in your dreams.
- Well, if anybody can figure out what this says, it's you.
- They look just like letters. I can spell our names with the Unown.
- Papa and Mama. They're together with me.
- Unown! Do you all want to play with me?
- Are you the one who has called me here?
- Papa, it's you! You look just like the Entei in the storybook, but it's you!
- If that is what you wish.
- Yeah, I'm Ash Ketchum from Pallet and I want to be a Pokémon Master.
- I'm Brock from Pewter City. I want to be your boyfriend.
- Thanks, but no, thanks. I'm a trainer, too. Want to battle?
- All right. A workout will help me stay in shape for the Johto League.
- Excuse me. But first, let's see if you're even in my league.
- All right. A workout will help me stay in shape for the Johto League.
- Excuse me. But first, let's see if you're even in my league.
- Well, get ready, because I always play to win!
- Everything is beautiful in Greenfield, huh? Then I can't wait to see all the girls!
- Greenfield is just as I imagined it. Beautiful fields of flowers that turn into a crystal wasteland that obliterates the entire ... Hey, what's going on?
- Papa? I want a mama, too.
- Can we all stay here forever?
- I am happy that you are happy.
- Go away! Leave us alone!
- Did she just say her mother and father were with her?
- If you're going to be crazy, at least take my Poké Gear.
- Do you think it will attack us? It's probably harmless.
- You'll be nice and dry in here, Togepi.
- That boy's looking for trouble.
- He's looking for his mom.
- Unown have the ability to read the thoughts of other life forms.
- The Unown can create new realities, altering the world using dreams.
- The Unown may be tapping into the imagination of Molly. That fortress could be one of Molly's wishes, made real by the Unown!
- Maybe the Unown are creating a new reality, like Professor Oak said.
- This must be part of Molly's dream world that the Unown created.
- They kind of look like alphabet soup, without the soup.
- I don't know about soup, but if we're not careful, we'll be in hot water.
- I haven't seen this many strange letters since my last personal ad.
- She can't be Hale's daughter. She's too old.
- They can make anything that girl wants come true.
- A Teddiursa? Figures a cute Pokémon trainer would have a cute Pokémon.
- Teddiursa's a lot more than just cute.
- Her dreamed-up Pokémon are tougher than real ones.
- It's like a storybook land invented by a five years old.
- If I want a chance at beating you, I'd better start to rock 'n' roll. And my Onix is just how I like to rock 'n' roll.
- Hey, I made you laugh. That's my first victory today.
- My little Phanpy is stronger than Brock's giant Onix.
- That's the book Papa always used to look at with me.
- You're by yourself a lot, aren't you, Molly?
- I'm Misty. I'm a Water Pokémon trainer and I used to be the leader of the Pokémon Gym in Cerulean City.
- You're a Pokémon gym leader?
- You bet I am. And I'm one of the best.
- You don't have to be a grownup to be a gym leader?
- You can become anything you wish.
- Since I'm a Water Pokémon trainer, I'll use Water Pokémon to battle.
- How can we breathe underwater?
- Go with the flow. Sometimes it's better not to ask questions.
- I wish I knew where you got such a reckless streak.
- I'm very sorry, Molly, but I'm not your real mama. You'll have to know the truth sooner or later.
- Don't you remember when we played together, Molly? We were at Professor Oak's house.
- Leave this place or you will be made to leave.
- I'm not going to lose to some illusion.
- You fool! See if this is an illusion!
- I am this girl's father and I must protect her.
- All of my Pokémon are my friends. We work together like a family.
- I'd say, prepare for trouble, but you're already in it.
- If anything ever happened to you, we'd be out of show business.
- I don't care if you're a real Pokémon or not. You can't replace her real father!
- Whether it is right or wrong I will do as she wishes!
- Stop! No more fighting. Please, Papa, no more.
- You're a great Pokémon trainer, Molly. A big part of battling is knowing when to stop.
- You already have the right instincts. I bet you could be a gym leader easy, if you wanted to.
- You see, Molly? We always battle hard, but we stay friends because we all love Pokémon!
- What do you say? It's just what your papa would want.
- I want things real again.
- I was created to be the father who could make you happy here. If you would be happier outside, in the real world I must go.
- They've generated so much psychic energy that they can't control it any longer.
- Listen! Get out of there or you could be trapped forever!
- The Unown are causing this! We have to find a way to stop them!
- Molly. I was happy and proud to be your father. The last thing I can do for you is to take you out of this place.
- I was born of your dreams. If you believe in me there is nothing I cannot do.
- I will miss you. Just keep me close in your dreams.
- How could we be happy? We didn't capture one new Pokemon.
- I'm happy for that little girl. She was adorable, yet indomitable. Just like me! And that Entei was powerful and inscrutable, just like me.
- And that Meowth was lovable, just like me!
- What does it matter if we failed at catching a Pokemon this time? We'll get another chance to fail next time.
- And so, until next time Team Rocket is fading out again!
