"As the pace-setter for the Diamond and Pearl series, Darkrai hits the ground running and sets a promising tone for future films." - Andrew K., Earn This.
"Despite its aesthetic faults and somewhat clichéd elements, The Rise of Darkrai is absorbing and entertaining. Take this for what it is: uplifting and fun. " - Jenny Sanders, Den of Geek!
"The start of a great Pokémon trilogy, absolutely loved this one! If I have to choose the best Pokémon film from the first ten, it would certainly be this one, the 10th theatrically released film!" - Rosalyn Lim.

The Rise of Darkrai (2007) at a glance
The Rise of Darkrai (2007) is the tenth theatrical film by Pokémon. It is directed by Kunihiko Yuyama. Unlike the older films, this animated feature is a part of a trilogy known as the Diamond & Pearl movie trilogy. It is the first of the said trilogy; followed by Giratina and the Sky Warrior (2008) and concluded with Arceus and the Jewel of Life (2009).
The Rise of Darkrai (2007) Synopsis
Ash may think he's seen everything when it comes to Pokémon, but is he ready to face the mysterious Darkrai in his latest awesome adventure? While on their way to a Pokémon Contest, our adventurers pass through Alamos Town, home of the Time-Space Tower. With the beautiful Alice, Ash and his friends discover that something is causing terrible nightmares for Pokémon and people alike! Baron Alberto, a dashing but arrogant fellow, immediately blames this turn of events on Darkrai. As if it just overheard the accusation, Darkrai appears and confronts our heroes!
Who is Darkrai? Is it a friend... or foe? As the sky tears above Alamos Town and Legendary Pokémon Dialga and Palkia struggle through the rips in a newly created dimension, their ensuing battle threatens to tear a hole in the time-space continuum! Will Ash and his friends survive this showdown and learn Darkrai's true nature?
Movie Review: The Rise of Darkrai (2007)
Lickilicky saves Alice.
Do you know why I love Pokémon? Them being fun and adorable is one thing but behind every Pokémon listed in the ever expanding Pokédex, there is unique story and there are certainly a lot of thoughts put into its each of their creations. Great imagination I would say.
Dialga and Palkia fighting with each other.
Nonetheless, here is an important note before I proceed with my movie review; I usually remember Pokémon names fairly quick and quite easily but I have no idea why I am unusually confused with Palkia and Dialga even to this date. Maybe the brain has registered Palkia's image as Dialga and Dialga's as Palkia. I hope I did not confuse anyone with this two in any way.
Darkrai appears!
Now, here comes the review! The Rise of Darkrai (2007) is the beginning of the deity Pokémon mythology in the anime films. A new series and a much improved animated feature in all aspects, it is the start of a great Pokémon trilogy and I absolutely loved this one!
Ash, Brock, Dawn and Alice.
Why, you ask. Well, it has beautiful visual, architecture and music. The song Oración itself is already magical (I would love to play the song if only I have my own piano) but who would have expected that the grand Time-Space Tower in Alamos Town is also the largest instrument in the Pokémon world?!
Aside from the usual casts from the television anime series and endearing Pokémon, this animated feature also features the legendary Pokémon Darkrai who is said to have ability to cause nightmare, Palkia who represents space and Dialga who represents time!
Unfortunately, not much is known about Palkia and Dialga in this one, you'll have to watch the later films but the misunderstood Darkrai is truly sweet and selfless. Still, weird thing about Darkrai is that it seems to not know that time has passed and it has long legs sometimes.
*It's not a biggie but I've checked my Darkrai plushie; it does not have any legs!*
Baron.
While I personally find this one incredibly special, little did I consciously know that there are plenty of coincident or similar elements with the all the previous films! It is unknown whether they are intentional or not but special thanks to Bulbapedia for the list of what's so special about this animated feature!
Movie - Similar Elements
M1 - Three Trainers each have the final evolution of that region's starter Pokémon.
M2 - The resolution to the plot involves a song being played.
M3 - A dimension containing Unown appears.
M4 - Balloon transportation is utilized throughout.
M5 - Human-to-Pokémon transformations occur.
M6 - Two guest characters begin a romance at the conclusion of the story.
M7 - The beginning and part of the main plot involve legendary Pokémon battle.
M8 - Part of the story is told through flashbacks.
M9 - The plot resolution involves Ash needing to solve a puzzle.
If I could add, it actually contains elements for the later animated features as well and I am sure you will know it if you watch them! ;)
Tonio and the rest observing the critical situation.
In the end, what's more amazing about The Rise of Darkrai (2007) is that this time, Ash did not save the day in unforgivable exaggerated ways and most notably, he saved the day together with Dawn, his travelling companion! Therefore, if I have to choose the best Pokémon film from the first ten, it would certainly be this one, the 10th theatrically released film!
This made it to my favorite list and other personal favorite would be Destiny Deoxys (2004), The Legend of Thunder! (2001) and Spell of the Unown (2000), in no particular order.
PS. I will share Worst to Best Pokémon films on MP when this marathon ends!
Movie Ratings
Will write a page regarding this and add this to all animated feature entries in the future.
Mythology lovers and Pokémon fans especially those who loved Generation IV!
By the way, I think I saw something like Rod of Asclepius or something that really resembles Staff of Healing towards the end. :D

Favorite Movie Character
Darkrai is my favorite character from this animated feature! It was misunderstood as a bad Pokémon but it is actually a heroic Pokémon! It sees the garden in Alamos Town as his home because he was cared by Alice's grandmother Alicia before so it did its best to protect it! It even sacrificed itself in attempting to stop Palkia and Dialga from destroying the whole town! How can he be not sweet and selfless?! ;_;
