Surf's Up is an animated mockumentary directed by Chris Buck and Ash Brannon. There was a possibility of a sequel for this family comedy animated feature but it was cancelled due to the box office disappointment (in the North America) despite grossing USD 149,000,000 worldwide against its USD 100,000,000 budget.

Surf's Up (2007) Synopsis

Surf's Up is an animated feature that goes behind the scenes of the high-octane world of competitive penguin surfing. The film profiles Cody Maverick, an up-and-coming surfer as he enters his first pro competition. Inspired by his hero, a legendary wave rider named Big Z, Cody leaves his family and his town of Shiverpool, Antarctica to travel to Pen Gu Island for the Big Z Memorial Surf Off. Cody believes that winning will bring him the admiration and respect he desires. But when he unexpectedly comes face to face with a washed up old surfer named The Geek, Cody begins to understand that the greatest champion isn't always the one who comes in first.

Movie Review: Surf's Up (2007)

This is a story of a penguin's determination to surfing championship. It does have hilarious moments that could make the viewers smile and true that it has beautiful graphics for its time but it has predictable story line and ending. So, unfortunately, the movie as a whole is not that spectacular to me, even when compared to other 2007s animated features.

What is most special about Surf's Up (2007) is that it's documentary-like and the animators clearly tried to animate every thing as realistic as possible, which is admirable. However, there is not much aww-worthy or super cool scenes despite there this one little naughty penguin who keeps making himself drown and that surfing is easily one of the coolest sport. Still it's not bad if you just want to watch something different than usual. Rated 7 stars for graphics and effort.
