Yokohama: Christmas Market at the Red Brick Warehouse

The Christmas season is upon us again, and even in Japan the cities are decorated for the season. In Japan Christmas is seen as a dating season more than anything else, and it is certainly a great chance to enjoy a romantic date with your love. During a recent visit to Yokohama, Japan's second largest city, my darling and I payed a visit to the Red Brick Warehouse where the German-style Christmas market helped getting us in the mood for Christmas.

The buildings at the Yokohama Renga (横濱煉瓦) were built back in 1905 and were, as the name suggests, originally used as warehouses. These days the warehouses instead serve as a shopping-center, and various events are held at the open space between the warehouses (in August the whole city of Yokohama, including the Red Brick Warehouses, gets filled with hundreds of Pikachus during the annual Pikachu Outbreak event).

The Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse is situated about 10 minutes walk from the JR Sakuragicho Station and the Minato Mirai Station. You can get there by train in about an hour from Tokyo. Occupancy rates of hotels in Yokohama is significantly lower than that of Tokyo, so if you're looking for bigger rooms at a cheaper price I would recommend using Yokohama as your base to explore the area, especially if you have the JR pass.
