Miyazaki’s New Boro the Caterpillar Short Not Scheduled Before October

The official website of the Ghibli Museum has revealed the list of shorts that will play at the museum’s theater through October.

While Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki previously stated that Hayao Miyazaki‘s planned CG short “Kemushi no Boro” (Boro the Caterpillar) would debut in July, the short is not listed among the museum’s upcoming shorts for the next three months.

Miyazaki previously said that he wants to return to making an anime feature film after the “Kemushi no Boro” short. He presented a project proposal for a feature-length film in August 2016. Despite not officially receiving a green-light for the feature film, Miyazaki decided to start animation work on the project anyway. He planned on creating storyboards for about 100 cuts of footage.

In a November television special, Miyazaki suggested that the film could be done by 2019 — before the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. However, Suzuki stated in April that this proposed schedule is simply impossible, and denied that Miyazaki can release his next proposed feature film in 2019.
