Nunsongyee — Korean Dessert Cafe to Satisfy Bingsu Cravings (Food Review)

Popular dessert cafe, Nunsongyee, has finally hit the shores of Singapore! Famous for my sweet tooth and constant laments that I'll die of diabetes, of course I was one of those Singaporeans who went crazy over bingsu, a Korean shaved ice dessert with various toppings like injeolmi, strawberries etc. With the hype of bingsu gradually slowing down, it's the best time to hunt for Singapore's best bingsu without queuing for a ridiculous amount of time — exactly what BFF and I did.

Situated in the heartland of Tampines, Nunsongyee is located comfortably on the second floor of Century Square, easily noticeable once you come up from the escalator.

BFF and I were spoilt by their wide array of choices available on Nunsongyee's menus. Other than typical bingsu flavours like oreo, blueberry or mixed berries, Nunsongyee offers a premium bingsu menu for dessert lovers (read: bingsu addicts) who are sick of the mainstream and safe bingsu flavours.

Of course BFF and I had to be adventurous and we chose Snow White Bingsu since we haven't heard of it outside of Nunsongyee. Raymond, the person in charge of Nunsongyee, kindly explained to us that Snow White Bingsu is a blend of white chocolate, macadamia nuts and cheese strips topped with vanilla ice cream, making it a perfect treat for cheese lovers.

Raymond offered to let us pick one of Nunsongyee's signature toast as well and we went for Honey Butter Toast, a Korean favourite — something sweet to balance out the savoury bingsu flavour we previously picked.

We didn't have to wait too long before our bingsu and toast were served at Nunsongyee even though we were at the Korean dessert cafe during dinnertime. Thankfully too, because I simply couldn't wait to sink my teeth into these delectable desserts!

My love for bingsu (and anything sweet) is so huge, it's the only thing I'd break my diet for.

Nunsongyee really delivered with this original creation! Balancing between sweet and salty, Snow White Bingsu is an interesting twist to the traditional sweet bingsu most Korean dessert cafes serve. Initially I was worried that the generous toppings of cheese strips would get jelak after a while but it complimented the vanilla ice cream perfectly. Hidden amidst the shaved ice are macadamia nuts, giving Snow White Bingsu with an interesting texture.

I only wish the hints of white chocolate were stronger because that was what attracted me to Snow White Bingsu, but I enjoyed its unconventional flavour, a refreshing change from what most dessert cafes are currently offering.

Our Honey Butter Toast was cooked to golden perfection — chewy but with a crispy crust, complete with vanilla ice cream before honey was drizzled over the entire dessert. The almond flakes garnish added crunch to the otherwise-boring ice cream.

The Honey Butter Toast was a hit for me because of my sweet tooth and I was guilty of polishing it off my plate quicker than the time it took to prepare this dessert. I mean, can you blame me when the Honey Butter Toast created a perfect balance between hot and cold dessert with its piping hot bread and soothing, creamy vanilla ice cream?

Barefaced and exhausted after a long week at work, but bingsu doesn't judge how you look.

My only qualm about the Snow White Bingsu is that it looks overexposed in every photo T_T

Hailed for being one of the first bingsu cafes in Singapore, and best known for its Bugis outlet opposite Bugis Junction, Nunsongyee should definitely be on your list of next cafes in Singapore to visit. BFF and I easily spent over an hour in Nunsongyee, soaking in the chillax vibe and catching up with each other!

Thank you for having us, Nunsongyee!
