Hanabira-mochi / Japanese New Year dessert / Wagashi



Hanabira-mochi is a Japanese sweet(Wagashi),usually eaten the beginning of the year.
It has more than 600 years history in the Imperial court.
It is also served at the first tea ceremony of the new year.
Actually,this dessert is still not popular in public.
Because most Japanese people don't have noble tea ceremony.


Hanabira means flower petal.
White sweet miso paste is included inside of the very soft mochi.
The very soft mochi is called Gyu-hi in Japan.
That brown stick is a sweetened and boiled burdock.
