Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea (2006) Synopsis
There's a legend out there, about a Sea Temple created by the People of the Water, where the Sea Crown is kept. No one has ever seen this Sea Crown, and very few people even know the story of the temple, except a few members of the People of the Water who wander through the Pokémon world. That all changes when a Pokémon Ranger named Jackie rescues a Manaphy Egg from a greedy pirate named Phantom! Phantom is absolutely determined to snatch the Sea Crown, and he'll need Manaphy to get to it. To stay one step ahead, Jackie will need to enlist the help of the People of the Water.

A chance encounter with the People of the Water puts Ash, May and friends right in the thick of the action, and May forms a very special bond with the Legendary Manaphy, even as the specter of Phantom hovers ever closer! Together, they must find the Sea Temple before Phantom does, unlocking the secret that connects Manaphy and the Sea Temple!

Movie Review: Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea (2006)

Manaphy Egg with Phantom.

Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea (2006) certainly has improved in various areas compared to the previous ones. Throwing a personal Pokémon Movie Marathon does makes it easier to tell the differences between Pokémon films and while it is arguably the worst of all Pokémon films, I beg to differ; it is not the worst there is although I would agree that it isn't a flawless animated feature!

Undersea.

Why? First of all, Pokémon stories usually set on the land or the sky if not alternate dimension. This one is under the sea! There are a lot of endearing water Pokémon which is amazing to watch and there is a brief spectacular Underwater Pokémon Show by Marina Group too!

Then, this one has improved introduction which makes it less difficult keep up with the ever growing Pokémon franchise. The creators of these films are more careful now, they did not specify the total number of Pokémon any more.

May and Manaphy.

What's more interesting are the new characters introduced, namely the Pokémon Ranger who utilises Capture Stylers instead of Pokéballs to command Pokémon and the story of the People of the Water, the descendants of an ancient water-based civilisation.

Manaphy, the featured legendary Pokémon, who is related, is interesting and adorable too. It is quite heartwarming to watch it hatch from egg, bond with May and to be independent in such a short time. Although it is kind of sad that Kyogre and the Temple of the Sea are not much highlighted here, seriously, how can these not make it great adventure family film?

Okay, now let's go straight to the worst part of this animated feature.

Manaphy!

There is a ridiculous awkward near-ending scene that amazed me to the point that I am not sure if I am amused or upset about it and I did vomit blood after watching that as it isn't "very-Pokémon" and totally inappropriate. I won't tell you what it is but I am sure you will know what I mean if you watch this as it is truly unexpected. However if you like fantasy, that short scene should be fine because it is a fantasy, nothing obscene just in case you are wondering!

(Vomit blood is the direct translation of a phrase in Chinese that I use to describe or as a response to, uhh, unbelievable stuffs. Some people use it when they are really, really furious though, lol.)

Pokémon Ranger Jackie.

Although I came to smile at it in the end, I believe this is the scene that put a permanent scowl on many general audience's face. Unfortunately, that is also in fact the scene that made this one ultimately not listed under my favorite but aside from this scene, I am quite pleased with almost everything else which is why I would like to defend, it is not the worst of worst.

As a conclusion, the ending of Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea (2006) is unfortunately ridiculous but it is certainly not the worst because it actually has one of the best backstory, maybe just poorly executed. Honestly, it is actually a pretty sweet, familial film!

PS. I'll write about Best to Worst Pokémon films on Moviepilot once Pokémon Movie Marathon ends by next month, stay tune!

  17. Really? I'll lend you my dictionary.
  18. Capture on!
  19. I used to think so, but now I'm not so sure.

  32. You see, our family is made up of descendants of the ones that have been called the People of the Water.
  33. And there aren't that many of us left.
  34. Oh, that was eggs-treme.
  35. What do you think you're doing with James' voice?
  36. The People of the Water traveled the oceans and lived together in peace and harmony with the water Pokémon. So in order to receive the ocean's blessings and show their gratitude to the Pokémon, our ancestors built what has come to be known as the Sea Temple.
  37. That must be the one in your dream. You even got the name right.
  38. The People of the Water still see the temple in their dreams.
  39. A memory written straight into your DNA.
  40. Maybe that means May's a descendant of the People of the Water and me too!
  41. You're not the only one, lady!
  42. What if the boss finds out?
  43. Easy. Deny everything.
  44. What kind of dope are you?.

  46. They've got something very important. We can't risk damage.
  47. Lend me your power!
  48. We're blasting off again!
  49. Hey, that's a Capture Styler. Does that mean you're a Pokémon Ranger?
  50. Jack Walker. Call me Jackie, please.
  51. I'm on a mission right now.
  52. I'm sorry we couldn't tell you.
  53. This is the egg of a Pokémon called Manaphy.
  54. I've heard of it. It's a Pokémon that travels the oceans.
  55. Sounds to me like you study quite a lot, Max.
  56. I read that it's super-rare and hardly anybody's ever seen one before.
  57. My mission is to see that this Manaphy egg gets properly hatched and then delivered to Samiya, the Sea Temple.
  58. You mean you saw it in your dream?
  59. You're lucky, May.
  60. Remember, there are only two types of people on this planet;  those who are chased and those who do the chasing. I know which is better. I go for the role of chaser every time.
  61. Pokémon Ranger! Now I suggest it's time for you to learn the meaning of give up once and for all.
  62. It's a shame you have to travel here all that way, but I'm afraid you have to go home empty-handed.
  63. Well, if you want it that bad, here you go!
  64. You're not getting away with this!
  65. Man, you're strong, Phantom. You take vitamins?
  66. You think you're so smart.
  67. Huh? What's going on? It's glowing.
  68. No! Manaphy doesn't belong to anyone!
  69. Anything that has no owner belongs to me.
  70. Don't you dare hurt my sister!
  71. Oh, no. It's okay. Yes, everything's going to be just fine.
  72. May, I'm afraid Manaphy prefers you.
  73. Often, whoever a Pokémon sees after hatching is assumed to be its mother.
  74. So I'm a...a mom?
  75. It's okay, Manaphy. Everything will be fine.
  76. Guess it's not easy being a mom.
  77. Thanks for the wisdom, Max.
  78. The Sea Temple can't be seen by the eyes of the mortals. It blends in with the water.
  79. The temple was carried away by the tides and since then, the temple has drifted along the ocean continuously, making it impossible to find.
  80. However, the temple appears now only at the time of the total eclipse of the Moon. That's when the People of the Water were said to have held their festival honoring the water Pokémon.
  81. The People of the Water originally built the temple in the exact same place where the Manaphy lived. Even after the temple began to move about freely, all Manaphy have been born with a kind of homing instinct, which allows them to locate the temple at any time.
  82. So as long as we've got Manaphy, we'll be able to find the temple.
  83. They wanted to steal the Sea Crown. We must protect the Sea Temple at all costs.
  84. We must also protect Manaphy at all costs, especially from the crusty old codger with the beard.
  85. Phantom the Pirate. He's one mean dude.
  86. The man of the hour!
  87. I'm James from Team Rocket, humbly happy to have tipped you off to those twerps.
  88. How are you at cleaning?
  89. The dirtiest.
  90. It appears that the People of the Water employed quite an elaborate system of water routes for their trade. So it's difficult to pinpoint their exit.
  91. I want to thank you kids. You've all been a big help to me up to this point. But now... Once we get out of this grotto, I'm leaving.
  92. This has to be a Pokémon Ranger's job.
  93. Manaphy's sound asleep. Must be tired.
  94. Yeah, after a day like we just had. Not to mention the fact that Manaphy's still only a baby.
  95. That's my ship, all right. The Blue Lagoon.
  96. I traveled the whole world on that ship when I was a young man.
  97. You've kept my boat shipshape all these years. Always feel free to use it.
  98. But we want to go with you!
  99. There's still so many good times left to share.
  100. All of your kind words are plenty.
  101. We'll have a drink upon my return.
  102. I wish we could have gone. There's so much more I want to learn about Manaphy.
  103. And there's so much more I want to learn about Lizabeth!
  104. It's frustrating just seeing them off like this.
  105. I feel so strange.
  106. Being young means you never turn away from adventure, you know.
  107. What are you afraid of? This is your chance. If you want to go, then you should go.
  108. There's nothing worse than regret, kid.
  109. I'm coming, Manaphy!
  110. You and I switched bodies.
  111. Is that one of Manaphy's powers?
  112. Yeah, it's called Heart Swap, and it's one of the ways Manaphy avoids danger.
  113. The effect wears off after a little while. Though I'm not sure what will happen if you get too far away.
  114. Who's the Prince of the Sea?.
  115. That's what they call Manaphy.
  116. Say, Manaphy, you didn't want me to leave?. Is that why you switched Ash and Jackie?.
  117. You make me so happy.
  118. Happy! Happy!
  119. Manaphy's saying what I say.
  120. It's the way that it has to be. All that we can do is just watch.
  121. Time for you to go, Manaphy, by yourself.
  122. Are you ready to go?
  123. All alone. That's the way Manaphy will travel the entire ocean, finally returning to its home, which is the Sea Temple.
  124. Why would you become a Pokémon Ranger in the first place, Jackie?
  125. I was a kid. I got stuck, and these Pokémon saved my life.
  126. I was hiking up in the mountains when a sudden blizzard came up, trapping me. It just kept blowing harder and harder. I thought that was the end for sure. I'd never experienced bitter cold like that before.
  127. When, all of a sudden, this group of migrating forest Pokémon was there. And one by one, they started to gather 'round me, Iike a bunch of hot-water bottles.
  128. If they hadn't been so kind to me back then, I wouldn't be here today. I guess I wanted to be a Pokémon Ranger ever since.
  129. I was about the same age as you.
  130. I love you, Manaphy. Can you say, I love you?
  131. Mana love you!
  132. Come on. You worry too much. Children need freedom to grow, or else, you know.
  133. You're really quite a chef.
  134. Perhaps you could teach my daughter how to cook.
  135. If those two continue to get closer and closer, Manaphy won't want to leave.
  136. What about Manaphy?. Put yourself in Manaphy's place for just a moment.
  137. Remember, Manaphy is the Prince of the Sea and destined to become leader of all the Sea Temple Pokémon.
  138. You can't expect Manaphy to stay with you forever. That's the way of nature.
  139. That old crusty crab thinks he's so smart, when we're the ones poised to pocket those diamonds and pearls.
  140. Hey, that sounds like a good name for a gang.
  141. Prince of the Sea. Isn't Manaphy amazing?.
  142. Here, May, I want you to have this. The People of the Water's mark. I'd like for you to wear it.
  143. That's not true.nYou can't blame yourself.
  144. That's what happened. Manaphy was just looking for May's bandana.
  145. The sign of the Sea Crown!
  146. But what's it say?.
  147. I don't know, Max. Maybe Grandpa can read it.
  148. Would you like me to tell you what it says, then, kids?.
  149. It's the least I can do to thank you for guiding me here.
  150. You know you have no power here.
  151. This temple belongs to the People of the Water.
  152. I happen to know everything about the People of the Water.
  153. Beyond this door, which may only be opened with the People of the Water's
  154. mark, lies the crown. And whosoever shall wear this crown shall be known as the King of the Sea.
  155. As thanks for guiding me here, I shall be kind enough to let you view the Sea Crown.
  156. That's the People of the Water's mark. And I went through a lot to get it.
  157. Remember, there are two types of men in this world of ours; those who look good with rare jewels and those who do not.
  158. For my money, the Sea Crown and I are a match made in the heavens above.
  159. I'll take care of Phantom. You get out of here. The temple is sinking.
  160. Lizabeth, take care of everyone.
  161. Don't worry, Ash. I'll be fine. I'm a Ranger, right?
  162. Unless I do something, both of our times are up.
  163. Manaphy's trying to get the temple back to the way it was before. And that's what we're gonna do, too.
  164. Pikachu, you take care of the two of them.
  165. Please, Ash. Ash, don't give up. Ash, be strong!
  166. Whosoever shall wear this crown shall be known as King of the Sea. And it's true.
  167. Behold the Sea Crown. It is the touchstone between the People of the Water and the water Pokémon.
  168. Manaphy's singing calmed them all right down! The way only Manaphy knows how.
  169. There are two types of men in this world;  those who are completely crushed and those who do the crushing.
  170. This is Jack Walker. Mission complete.
  171. Manaphy! I'm so proud of you and all that you've done.
  172. You won't forget me, will you?.
  173. Love you, May. Love you, Mama.
  174. May, are you all right?.
  175. No, I'm not all right. But I will be.http://rosalynmuses.blogspot.com/2014/05/olm-inc.html
